2016 Gustafson Award nominations

Posted on

The SDC Steering Committee is seeking nominations for the Gustafson Award.  If you know a SDC agency or person within a SDC that has been doing great work and deserves some recognition, nominate them!

The Gustafson Award was established in 2012 to remember one of our dear colleagues, Randy Gustafson from the Tennessee SDC, who also served on the SDC Steering Committee.  Randy was a wonderful person and a big part of the SDC family.  The Gustafson Award was created in his memory to honor outstanding contributions to the SDC network.

Anyone can submit a nomination form.  The deadline for nominations is February 29, 2016.  The winner will be announced during the annual SDC meeting April 6-8, 2016.

Posted on Updated on

It’s that time again for SDC Steering Committee elections.

Are you looking for an exciting challenge that can enhance your knowledge of the Census Bureau and help shape the future direction of the State Data Center (SDC) program? Nominate yourself (or someone else, with their approval) to the SDC Steering Committee.  All representatives from lead and coordinating agencies are invited to stand for office.  The current Steering Committee has membership from large and small states; north, east, south, west, and places in between; lead and coordinating agencies; and men and women.

In order to have an election, we need YOU!  SDC Steering Committee nominations are now open. With this call for nominations, please consider the contribution you can make by filling one of the three seats that will be open this year!

Nominations are due by January 15, 2016.  Each nominee should submit a brief description (two to four sentences) of him/herself and concise answers to the following questions:

1) What do you think the primary role of the Steering Committee is or should be?

2) What would your primary goal(s) be as a member?

3) What is your vision for the SDC network for 2017 and beyond?

4) What do you think the SDC network can do to add value to Census data?

Please e-mail your nomination and responses to the above questions to Amy Bittner (

How The Steering Committee is Constituted

Your SDC Steering Committee consists of nine members. Each has a three-year term. Three members rotate off every year and three are elected. An incumbent may serve two consecutive terms, after which the member must wait two years before becoming eligible to run again for the Steering Committee. Elections are held typically 30-60 days before the annual meeting. (The 2016 annual meeting is the week of April 4-8).  Term of office begins with t the commencement of the annual meeting. Representatives from a lead or a coordinating agency are eligible to run for the Steering Committee.

The Steering Committee elections will begin in January. Every state has one ballot. Lead agencies are encouraged to get consensus from their coordinating and affiliate agencies about their vote, because there is only ONE ballot per state and territory.

If you have any comments or questions about the SDC Steering Committee election process, please feel free to contact me or any other member of the Steering Committee.  A complete listing of current Steering Committee members can be found at:
